In this six-week intermediate course you will learn the basics of three-dimensional wood carving, as you carve your choice of native bird: tūī or rūrū.

Students will be introduced to all the fundamentals of carving that will enable them to get started, including sharpening, care and maintenance of carving chisels, tool choices, transferring designs onto timber, the correct sequence of steps required to produce any 3D carving design, tool control and how to apply a basic oil and wax finish. All materials and tools will be provided.

This class is suitable for people with some carving experience, and is a great next step for those who have taken Wanda’s relief carving class.

Beginners are welcome, but in the event that a participant is unable to complete the project within class time, they are invited to book a bench at their expense to come back and finish it off.
